How to Prepare for CLAT from Class 11: A Plan Around Your Exam Date

Build reading, maths and reasoning together, then increase timed practice as your actual exam date approaches.

Part of the CLAT 2027 guide

Start CLAT preparation in Class 11 with manageable work across all five sections, regular reading and an introduction to current affairs. Count the months to your target exam; do not assume that two school years equal twenty-four preparation months.

Start with the calendar

The December entrance exam can fall before Class 12 board examinations. For CLAT 2027, the announced exam is in December 2026 and eligible appearing candidates may sit their qualifying examinations in March or April 2027.

If you are targeting a later cycle, use its announced date when available. Until then, keep the plan flexible rather than inventing a date.

First few weeks: understand and sample

Read the exam pattern and try questions from every section. Begin reading fiction and non-fiction, refresh percentages and ratios, and practise identifying arguments and applying passage-based rules. Use untimed work to understand errors before making everything a speed exercise.

Build foundations through Class 11

Rotate sections through the week. Keep an error log and add extra practice where it reveals a gap. Start following significant news and its background; there is no official twelve-month cutoff that makes earlier learning worthless.

Do not spend eight months only reading or postpone maths until Class 12. Early sampling gives you time to discover what needs work.

Move towards timed work

Introduce timed sectional sets, then occasional full mocks once you understand the format. Review guesses, wrong answers and omissions. Increase frequency nearer the exam only when you can still correct the problems identified.

Balance school commitments

Use holidays for longer practice when helpful and reduce the workload around school examinations. Keep a realistic minimum rather than treating missed sessions as failure. Check the applicable Class 12 marks requirement and protect your school preparation.

Final weeks

Emphasise revision, fresh practice to check improvements and familiar test routines. Continue following relevant current affairs. Your plan should respond to results, not to a claim that every Class 11 student improves at the same rate.
